The Tiger Super Cat and Cat XL, are a development of the original Cat first
produced in 1997. They are designed from the outset to be a one donor kit. The
Cat XL is basicly the same specification as the Super Cat but comes with an extra
3 inches across the seating area for the slightly larger driver. With either version, if
you start with a Ford Sierra hatchback OHC model and a Tiger Cat ‘Major Kit’,
you can build a superb sportscar capable of outstanding performance on both
road and track. Although the kits are what they say they are - ‘Major’, you may still
wish to incorporate further upgrades such as powder coating the chassis or
reconditioning the engine etc. However, should you decide to spread the build
costs and start with our chassis/body kit and build from there, then all parts are
available as you progress. The only non Sierra part you will need is a Cortina
steering rack (however, this is included in the ‘Major’ kit).
The chassis is manufactured from 1 inch square tube and the Ford Sierra OHC engine is used, although others such as the Ford Zetec 16v can also be fitted. These are mainly fitted with twin 45 Webers although injection can easily be fitted. The single downdraught unit can be used from the original engine. A hole is cut in the bonnet to allow for this to be fitted with a chrome type air filter.
The 5 speed Type 9 Sierra gearbox is retained. The original front hubs and brakes are retained and the Sierra column and stalks are fitted. The Sierra differential and complete rear suspension is used with Tiger shocks and springs fitted.
The main sides of the Cat body are supplied in alloy with
all other panels in coloured GRP. Front cycle wings are
standard with the option of Clam Shell wings like the
Lotus Seven. There are 8 colours in the gelcoat
range with many others available as an option.
Performance
Fitted with a standard 2ltr OHC Ford Sierra engine running on twin 45 Webers,
the approx 0-60mph time is around 7.75 seconds. This same engine, fitted with
a fast road cam will achieve it in just over 6.8 seconds. The Cat fitted with a 1.8
Ford Zetec 16v with twin Webers will give approximately 6.4 seconds and fitting
a 2ltr Zetec with Webers will give approximately 6 seconds. Both cars use the
Sierra 5 speed type 9 gearbox.
